Contaminated Land Remediation and Validation

Contaminated Land Site Investigation, Remedial Strategy Implementation and Validation

Redevelopment of a commercial site located on a former landfill - Southampton

Sevenoaks Environmental Consultancy successfully designed a remedial strategy and executed the contaminated land remediation at a commercial site that was located over an old landfill in Southampton.  Contaminated land remediation and validation was required in order to manage risks associated with the development and to help discharge Contaminated Land planning conditions imposed on the proposed development by the Local Authority.

Ground contamination issues were realised at site further to the findings of a previous site investigation which had identified that part of the site was located over a former landfill which had been infilled with waste materials from ship / submarine building at the time of the Second World War.  Contaminants of concern primarily included asbestos and hydrocarbons.

Following appraisal of the pre-existing site assessment information a further phase of confirmatory investigation was conducted focusing on previously excluded areas in order to delineate the extent of contamination and produce a Remedial Strategy to meet with Client and Regulatory requirements. This was cost effectively combined with a Geotechnical Assessment of the site at the same time to inform foundation design for the new commercial development.  Cable Percussive boreholes were drilled under controlled conditions to protect the site investigation team and other receptors from exposure to contaminated material contained within the former landfill.

Our subsequent remedial strategy was based upon the new findings which helped to facilitate contaminated land risk management through remediation and facilitated considerable disposal cost savings for the Client following better delineation and segregation of asbestos impacted ground.  We determined buried obstructions prior to the commencement of piling by utilising geophysical survey techniques and oversaw groundworks in collaboration with the Client's construction team to help avoid cross contamination and therefore avoid removal of more contaminated arisings than absolutely necessary to facilitate construction of the new development.

Through close liaison with the Client, the Principal Contractor and the Regulators we were able to support the redevelopment of the site which initially posed the Client and their construction team some complex contaminated land problems.
